This Sunday we learned about the concept of mitzvot-commandments or good deeds. We read the book “It’s a Mitzvah” to understand some of the values that are conveyed through certain mitzvot like caring for the earth, honoring parents, and giving charity/tzedakah to those in need. Each student decorated their own tzedakah box to bring home. We also learned the three Hebrew letters the make up the word Shabbat: shin, bet and tav.
We had a Sukkot packed day in PreK/K this week. Our day began learning about the basics of Sukkot from the book Night Lights. We also participated in the schoolwide mitzvah project creating soup packets for a Natick Food pantry. We had a blast in the sukkah singing songs, learning the blessings one says during the the holiday and hanging up our hand made decorations. A highlight was our opportunity to build mini sukkot out of lincoln logs, playsticks and other building materials. We ended the day with a new PJ Library book on Sukkot called The Vanishing Gourd.
Our first session of Sunday School was dedicated to becoming comfortable as a group and getting to know one another. Our main curricular focus was on the High Holidays: thinking about new beginnings, learning to reflect on ways we want to grow in the coming year and be better friends/siblings/sons/daughters etc. We read The Hardest Word as a way to talk about the theme of saying "I'm Sorry" during Yom Kippur. The class particularly enjoyed music with Rachel who definitely knows how to engage this active group through song. We ended the day with a Choice Time, including Hebrew Yoga, as a way to become familiar with the Hebrew Alphabet through yoga positions.
