Today was a great day in the 4th grade classroom. After our usual Community Gathering and music class, we dove deep into the book, "I Have Some Questions About G-d". We worked as a class and in small groups to discuss and read the chapter. The question that we talked about had to do with Hebrew, and wondering if G-d only understands Hebrew. After our dicussion and writing, we looked at the Bible Graphic Novel, which the students seemed to really enjoy. After we split up for Hebrew, my class reviewed the Hebrew letters they have already learned and practiced writing the letters too. We ended the class learning 2 Israeli dances which generated a lot of laughs and smiles. Looking forward to seeing you all next week!
The topic of our class today was peace and equality. During music class we learned a new song (ask your students to sing it for you). “Don’t walk in front of me I may not follow. Don’t walk behind me I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend. Together we will walk in the land of Hashem.” We sang these words many times and after a few times, I taught them another verse to the song in Hebrew. “Lo yisa goy el goy cherev, lo yilme’du od milchama.” which translates to “A nation shall not raise a sword against a nation and they shall not learn any more war.” We talked about these passages briefly and students were asked to find similarities, differences or pick one text to focus on and either write a written response, create and illustration or write a poem. The students thoughtfully completed this activity and followed up the activity with a meaningful discussion. We worked on the next lesson in the Hebrew book that we are using. We learned a new letter and practiced reading and writing the other letters and vowels that we previously learned. Looking forward to diving into some Tu’Bishvat learning in the weeks to come.
