I am Ellen Kelner and I will be your child's grade 1 teacher at SSJS this year. I have been teaching this class for many years now and I am looking forward to another great year. The first grade curriculum includes the teaching of some Torah stories, the holidays, and the Hebrew alphabet. We do many hands on activities and use a multi-sensory approach to learning the Hebrew alphabet so all children can be successful. While curriculum is important, I also want to make this class fun and enjoyable for the children so that they want to come each week. I hope to create warm memories that will make them also want to return year after year.
The children are welcome to bring a snack. Since some children have serious allergies, the SSJS has a policy of NO NUTS and sharing is not allowed. A small block of time will be set aside for "snack time" each week. ASK ME ABOUT: Why did we eat apples and honey on Rosh Hashana? Why do we celebrate Rosh Hashana? What Hebrew letters did you learn?
