Are you a Temple organization?
No, the Sunday School is independent and not affiliated with any particular
temple.
Where do you celebrate Holidays and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs?
The Sunday School holds High Holiday services at
Newton North High School. Bar/Bat Mitzvahs take place at a variety of places.
Parents are free to choose where to have their child's event.
How does the Sunday School operate?
The Sunday School for Jewish Studies is a non-profit organization, headed by
a parent Board of Trustees that hires staff and
oversees the school's operations.
Are there special fees or dues?
Tuition is charged for each child, with a discount offered for second and third
children who are enrolled. There is a small charge for Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies,
and tutoring for these events is privately arranged. Scholarships and payment
plans are offered to those families needing such assistance.
May I speak with members, get referrals, and check out the school?
Absolutely! Please call the School office at 617-264-8855, and we will be happy
to arrange for you to visit the school and talk to a parent with a child currently
enrolled in the school.
Is my 11-year-old too late for Bar/Bat Mitzvah training?
No. No one is too late to start studying for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Some students may focus mainly on understanding and speaking about their Torah and Haftarah portions while other students may focus more on chanting Hebrew from the Torah. It is a flexible endeavor and depends on an agreed course of study between tutor and families.
All students are challenged but not overwhelmed by rote memorization. We strive to make the Bar/Bar Mitzvah experience a meaningful one for students and their families.
How often do classes meet?
Grades 1-7 meet once a week on Sunday mornings. Kindergartners meet once a month. Post grads will have six activities during the school year, plus an end of year Shabbaton.
Are interfaith families welcome?
Just ask any of our numerous interfaith member families! While The Sunday School
is a Jewish organization, we provide a moral and spiritual education that accommodates
a wide range of interests and beliefs.
How can I learn more?
Please call the Sunday School office at 617-264-8855, and we will gladly answer
your questions and send you registration information.
